Abstract

ComBo, a new group intervention being presented in the current session, is an educational resource aimed at professionals working with adults in need of AAC in residential homes and facilities for daily activities. It is one of the intervention packages within the Swedish program AKKtiv, Augmentative and Alternative Communication Early Intervention, aiming at providing support to communication partners of individuals with developmental disabilities affecting communication (Ferm et al. 2011; Fäldt et al. 2020; Jonsson et al. 2011: Rensfeldt Flink et al. 2022).

All AKKtiv intervention packages include instruction in responsive communication and environmental milieu teaching strategies as well as theory and practice in alternative and augmentative communication, AAC, (Beukelman & Light, 2020; Dada et al. 2021).

Two educated ComBo instructors are in charge of the ComBo group. ComBo is typically delivered during four months, encompassing eight 120-min group sessions. Methods and tools related to AAC include aided language input and the use of multimodal AAC. All staff are provided with runiversally designed ComAlong-boards to use at their jobs. The ComBo sessions include lectures, discussions, role play, video clips, practical exercises, and follow-up of assignments in-between sessions using video-feedback.
