Abstract

It is crucial to gather relevant information about the augmentative communication user’s communication in order to identify their communication skills and plan the intervention appropriately.

A group of 13 speech therapists and educational psychologists from 10 member organisations of the Federació Catalana d’Entitats de Paràlisi Cerebral (FEPCCAT) and Confederación ASPACE observed a lack of objectification and systematisation in the assessment of the communication and communication skills of students and adult users of their services.

The group proposed the implementation of two consensus-based tools: the Communication Matrix of the University of Oregon and the Qinera Communication Milestones table, based on the AAC Goal Grid of Tobii Dynavox.

The objective is to ascertain whether these tools align with the communication needs of users with cerebral palsy and related disabilities who require intensive support. It was concluded that the manner in which the evaluation is conducted can influence the results obtained and the attention given to the group. If the same criteria are applied and the same tools are used, there is a tendency for greater objectivity and improved process systematisation.

Session will be presented in Spanish.
