As eye tracking technology continues to evolve, so does its potential to provide meaningful access to communication and daily life tools for individuals with complex physical and communication needs. In this session, we look closely into the use of eye gaze technology on the iPad platform, expanding upon foundational knowledge to explore advanced features, practical strategies, and real-world case applications.
With over 32% of people worldwide owning an iPad (and 43% of Americans), the demand for accessible solutions on this platform is growing rapidly. The iPad’s versatility, offering speech generation, social interaction, education, environmental control, and entertainment, makes it an ideal device for many families and people who use Assistive Technology. However, for individuals who rely on eye gaze as their primary access method, this Apple experience has historically been fragmented or inaccessible. Recent hardware advancements, and eye tracking compatibility with iPadOS have begun to change this situation, enabling new opportunities for independent access.
This session will explore the landscape of eye gaze access on iPad, focusing on both native Apple eye tracking and third-party tools such as external eye tracking systems and personalization of the system. We will compare the performance of eye tracking within AAC apps versus across broader applications, identifying specific challenges—like navigating gestures such as swiping, and scrolling, watching videos without interruption—and providing solutions.
Participants will gain insight into how various users can interact with the iPad using eye gaze and what considerations should inform assessment and implementation. We will offer evidence-based recommendations for configuring iPad settings, selecting apps, and setting achievable goals for users with different levels of experience and different needs.
Through demonstration, examples of tips and tricks, and presentation of case studies, this session will highlight the transformative impact that optimized eye gaze access can have on communication, independence, and quality of life. By exploring this technology through both technical and person-centered lenses, attendees will leave with a comprehensive understanding of when and how to recommend eye gaze for iPad users and how to support its successful implementation in clinical, educational, or home settings.
This session is ideal for professionals and families seeking to deepen their understanding of emerging iPad accessibility features for individuals with complex needs.
