Abstract

Being able to read is very important to participate in today’s society. Due to various personal and external factors, learning to read and spell is difficult for children who cannot or hardly speak and use AAC.

A procedure for teaching (technical) reading and spelling skills (i.e. the LOeS-procedure) was developed and evaluated in several case studies. Recently, we implemented the LOeS-procedure in a mixed class of children that speak and children who use AAC. Within the last 4 years, over 600 course members have been trained to implement the LOeS-procedure in the Netherlands and Belgium.

The importance of literacy development, the effects of the LOeS-procedure on reading and spelling abilities and participation, and experiences from the perspectives of a young adult who uses AAC, a teacher, a therapist and a parent who followed the course will be presented.Â
