Session ID: 121
Objectives:
Participants will be able to:
1. Discuss the rights and abilities of people with disabilities to live independently.
2. Describe how AAC can make it possible to live a full life and experience autonomy that is meaningful, empowering and fulfilling.
Hello, my name is Tomi Bartzenko. I am a person with a disability, an AAC user, and a bachelor’s student in Education and Social Sciences, with a specialization in Disability Studies. I am also a social activist in the fields of inclusion and accessibility.
My work focuses on two main areas: promoting AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication), and advancing independent living for people with disabilities. I serve on the board of directors of ISAAC Israel and am a fellow in the leadership program for AAC users. I am active in promoting independent living in the community for people with disabilities, and I founded the movement that promotes opposition of institutions for people with disabilities. I was involved in the drafting of the Social Services Law in Israel.
A few years ago, I moved out of my parents’ home to live independently. For me, as a person with a disability, this was not something to take for granted. Leaving home and building an independent life is a major challenge for people with disabilities—a process filled with barriers and stigmas.
Through my story, I want to show that it is possible—and how, with the help of AAC, one can lead a full and meaningful independent life.
