SUMMARY:ISAAC Forum @ ATAAC 2026
DESCRIPTION:ISAAC International Forum 2026\nIn October 2026\, ISAAC will host its first in-person ISAAC International Forum in Zagreb\, Croatia. This two-day pre-conference\, held in collaboration with ATAAC\, will take place on October 19 – 20\, immediately preceding the ATAAC Conference. The pre-conference days will be developed\, sponsored\, and managed by ISAAC. \nConfirmed speakers include John Costello\, Katherine Drager\, Karen Erickson\, Lori Geist\, and Janice Light. \nThe full program and additional details\, including registration information\, will be announced soon. \nISAAC Forum – A New Way to Connect\nISAAC is thrilled to announce a new in-person opportunity to connect\, learn\, and advance the field of AAC: the ISAAC International Forum. \nThe ISAAC International Forum responds to the AAC community’s call to continue the tradition of in-person gatherings. These events bring together participants from across the globe to exchange ideas\, build meaningful connections\, inspire one another\, and strengthen our shared sense of community. \nISAAC Forums are organized in collaboration with established organizations in the fields of AAC and AT. By partnering with like-minded organizations and sharing a joint platform\, ISAAC can continue its tradition of in-person events while acting responsibly from a financial perspective. \nISAAC will continue to offer virtual conferences\, which have been highly successful and have attracted participants worldwide. The next ISAAC Virtual Conference will take place in November 2026. \nIn addition\, ISAAC remains committed to hosting standalone in-person conferences\, once global economic conditions and ISAAC finances can again sustain large in-person conferences. We all look forward to the next full ISAAC International Conference\, to be held in Italy\, as soon as conditions allow for it.

SUMMARY:Comprehensive Literacy Instruction for Multi-Level Groups of Learners Using AAC
DESCRIPTION:Important note: The content across the two sessions with Karen Erickson and Lori Geist is designed to be complementary and participants are invited to attend one or both. Participation in day one (Comprehensive Literacy Instruction) is not required in order to benefit from day two (Starting with the Basics). However\, participants who attend day one will be especially well‑prepared for the in‑depth focus on foundational AAC intervention strategies discussed on day two. \n\nPrograms serving learners who cannot rely solely on speech to be heard and understood often include learners with a range of literacy abilities and learning needs. In this session\, participants will learn to plan and deliver comprehensive\, multi-level literacy instruction to address the full range of learning needs. Beginning with a framework focused on identifying whether an individual learner requires emergent or conventional literacy instruction\, the session will provide specific guidance regarding multi-level\, comprehensive literacy instruction for individuals who use or would benefit from the use of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC).  \nParticipants will be able to: \n\nlist 4 questions to determine the need for emergent versus conventional literacy instruction.\ndescribe 5 elements of emergent literacy instruction.\ndescribe 5 elements of conventional literacy instruction.\naccess 4 free implementation models to support application of emergent and conventional literacy instructional practices.\n\nAgenda:  \n  \n9:00-9:15:        Introductions \n9:15-9:45:        Comprehensive literacy instruction \n9:45-10:15:      Identifying an appropriate comprehensive literacy plan \n10:15-10:30:    Break \n10:30-12:00:    Emergent literacy routines and overview of available free resources \n12:00-1:00:      Lunch \n1:00 – 2:30:      Conventional literacy routines \n2:30-2:45:        Break \n2:45-3:45:        Integrating emergent and conventional routines in multilevel instruction and      overview of available free resources \n3:45-4:00:       Wrap-up and final questions

SUMMARY:Working Toward UNITY: Principles for Advancing Communication Access for Children with Disabilities
DESCRIPTION:  \nThis workshop will offer a comprehensive discussion of considerations for equitable access to augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) for children with significant disabilities.  We will use the concept of UNITY to frame the discussion.  Grounded in the principle that communication is a universal human right\, UNITY emphasizes meeting Universal Needs\, ensuring that every child has opportunities to express themselves and participate fully in their communities. A strong Network of Support—including families\, educators\, clinicians\, and peers—creates consistent\, culturally responsive communication environments to support AAC approaches. Evidence-based Intervention practices in AAC promote growth in expressive and receptive communication. Technology\, from low-tech tools to advanced speech-generating devices\, expands multimodal communication options and supports meaningful engagement. Finally\, Yet to Come presents a future-oriented vision\, recognizing each child’s evolving identity as a communicator and the potential that continues to unfold over time. \nProposed agenda:\n10:15-10:30: Welcome and overview \n10:30-11:15: Universal needs \n11:15-12:00: Network of support \n12:00-1:00: Lunch \n1:00-1:45: Intervention \n1:45-2:30: Technology \n2:30-2:45: Break \n2:45-3:30: Yet to come \n3:30-4:00: Reflection \n

SUMMARY:Starting with the Basics: A Universal Approach to Augmentative and Alternative Communication Intervention in Schools
DESCRIPTION:Around the world\, there are learners who cannot rely solely on speech to be heard and understood who need access to augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). Unfortunately\, access to AAC is still limited by a lack of resources and myths regarding eligibility and outcomes. In this session\, participants will learn about an evidence-based implementation model\, Project Core\, which is designed to help educators\, clinicians\, and families teach early symbolic communication in the context of literacy and language intervention. Using an approach centered on the power of core vocabulary\, participants will learn about foundational AAC intervention strategies\, myths and misunderstandings that limit AAC access\, and emergent literacy routines that provide meaningful contexts for learning AAC. The session will also highlight how the open-source implementation model can be translated\, adapted\, and culturally localized for international partners\, with examples of how Project Core materials and core vocabulary resources have been successfully implemented across languages and global contexts to support more equitable access to AAC. \nParticipants will be able to: \n\ndescribe 3 evidence-based instructional practices to support communication and language learning. \nlist 4 components of the Project Core implementation model.\naccess free resources to support application of foundational AAC intervention.\nrecognize the range of resources readily available for translation and localization.\n\n\nAgenda:  \n9:00-9:15:        Introductions \n9:15-10:15:       Core Vocabulary and Early Symbolic Communication \n10:15-10:30:    Break \n10:30-11:00:    Teaching Symbolic Communication Across the School Day \n11:00-11:15:      Evidence-Based Emergent Literacy as a Context for Teaching Symbolic Communication \n11:15-12:00:     Shared Reading and Communication \n12:00-1:00:      Lunch \n1:00-1:45:         Predictable Chart Writing and Communication \n1:45-2:30:         Alphabet/Phonological Awareness and Communication \n2:30-2:45:        Break \n2:45-3:45:         Independent Reading/Writing and Communication \n3:45-4:15:         Examples of Global Use and Invitation to Translate and/or Localize \n4:15 – 5:00:      Wrap up and final questions
