Richard Cave

Dr. Richard Cave is a Speech and Language Therapist with over 20 years of clinical experience supporting people at risk of speech change and loss through progressive, acquired and congenital conditions. He is a national adviser to the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists on voice banking and MND, has trained over 1,000 therapists in voice banking, and spent seven years with the MND Association working on assistive technology — work recognised with the Association’s Allied Health Professional Award.

Richard is co-Director of the Centre for Digital Language Inclusion (CDLI) at UCL’s Global Disability Innovation Hub, where the team builds personalised AI speech recognition for people whose speech is difficult to understand. His doctoral research examined the lived experience of using automatic speech recognition with MND, and from 2019 to 2024 he consulted for Google Research on Project Euphonia and Project Relate.

He also leads Healthcare for the ElevenLabs Impact Program, which provides free, lifetime access to voice-restoration technology to people living with permanent voice loss, regardless of diagnosis — including, now, the restoration of singing voice.
