Objectives:

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify three visibility or human readiness gaps that may limit AAC users’ participation, agency, belonging, or communication access in everyday settings.
  2. Apply the VISIBLE™ Framework to examine how voice, identity, confidence, communication partner behavior, and environmental access shape AAC inclusion.
  3. Design one practical Human Readiness strategy that supports more accessible, respectful, and participatory communication across families, schools, workplaces, services, or community settings.

Abstract

AAC access is not only about the availability of tools, technology, vocabulary, or supports. It is also about whether communication partners, families, educators, clinicians, workplaces, and communities are ready to listen, wait, adapt, include, and make everyday participation possible. Too often, people with complex communication needs remain under-heard not because they lack something to say, but because environments are not human-ready for their communication.

This session introduces Human Readiness and the VISIBLE™ Framework — Voice, Identity, Spotlight, Inner Work, Belief, Leverage, and Elevation — as a practical lens for strengthening AAC inclusion in everyday life. Participants will explore how confidence, visibility, identity, access, and communication partner readiness shape participation today and into the future.

Attendees will leave with practical strategies to identify visibility gaps and support more respectful, accessible, and inclusive communication.

Because AAC in everyday life requires more than access to communication. It requires communities ready to honor it.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
