2.     Identify at least three obstacles that interfere with opportunities for AAC users to build significant bonds with their fellow communicators.

3.    Identify at least 3 ways in which families and care providers can support AAC communicators in building relationships with other AAC communicators, and help to expand the possibilities for AAC communicators to participate in community-based peer events.

Abstract

AI has been receiving a great deal of attention for its potential to improve the experience of using synthesized speech generating devices, helping to increase speed of composition, accuracy and even access to foreign language support.

But, such technological advances are only part of what AAC communicators need to improve their lives and lived experiences using AAC.  Relationships with other AAC communicators are extremely important for health and well-being, helping to combat the sense of loneliness and isolation that many AAC users face and supporting personal growth.

The panelists in this presentation will share their experiences with being in community with other AAC communicators, demonstrating the value of lasting friendships between AAC communicators, and the positive impact those friendships have on quality of life, AAC communication skills and community participation.
